This plant is quick-growing, sustainable, and is harder than several types of woods used in kitchen tools and furniture. Despite being harder than maple, bamboo is gentler than plastic on other kitchen tools such as knives.

Bamboo is actually not a wood, contradicting to what many of us think. Still, its beauty never fails to make the countertop as appealing as a wooden surface. Thus, it has all that one expects from a reliable cutting board.

Bamboo cutting boards are highly sturdy and more resistant to destruction than the wooden ones. They also have antimicrobial properties. Bamboo itself is denser than other woods, which also adds to its durable nature.

However, this does not mean that bamboo boards do not require timely maintenance. In fact, with daily cleansing and right care, you are likely to end up with an increased lifespan of a bamboo cutting board.

Tips for Bamboo Cutting Board Care

To retain the new look as well as extend the life of a bamboo board, it is essential to follow the cleaning instructions of its manufacturer. This ensures that you are going in the right direction to take good care. Along with these instructions, you can follow some tips for ensuring maximum care.

1. Oil It before Use

It might be the first time for you to work with a bamboo cutting board. In that case, it is recommended applying food-grade mineral oil to it. To do so, you need slightly warm the board on low heat so that it becomes ready to absorb oil. Now, you can apply the oil using a cotton ball.

While applying the oil, consider making more powerful strokes so that the oil penetrates inside the bamboo. Once done, let the board settle for almost half an hour and then wipe it with a clean cloth.

Applying mineral oil ensures that the bamboo remains resistant to microorganisms despite using it daily. It also enhances the radiance and grains of the board and keeps splitting at bay. For best results, it is better to apply this oil once a month.

2. Wash with Care

Although bamboo is not an absorbent, it is not recommended to soak a bamboo board in water. This is because it can end up warping the bamboo board. It is better to rinse than immersing it. Similarly, do not put the board in the dishwasher. This is because the protective oil coating will be ripped off by the heat due to which the board can then appear warped.

3. Prevent Stains

To keep stains at bay, consider cleaning the board instantly after use. To clean, scrape all leftovers on it with the help of a spatula and then wash the board using a mix of water and mild dish soap. Ensure that the board is not kept in contact with water for a long time.

Finally, use running hot water to rinse off the board and use a clean towel to dry it nicely. Finally, position the board straight in vertical pose and let it dry for some hours.

4. Use Natural Means to Remove Stubborn Stains

At times, the board may show some hard to clean stains. In that case, avoid using chemical agents to remove them from bamboo. If the stains are due to the bright-colored foods, it is best to use baking soda or coarse salt.

Rub baking soda using a wet cloth or salt on the stained area. In case you are using salt, rub it until the stain is gone. If you are using baking soda, allow the paste to settle for a few minutes and then rinse the board.

5. Disinfect Naturally

If you have kept meats, seafood, or poultry on your board, it is necessary to disinfect it after use. This is true despite the fact that bamboo contains antiseptic properties. This helps in minimizing cross-contamination.

You can use white vinegar as a natural disinfectant, as it is rich in solid antimicrobial properties. To use it, mix water and vinegar in equal ratio and put a cloth into it. Now, use that cloth to rub the board. You can now sprinkle baking soda and scrub the surface using a sponge. Finally, let the mix settle for some minutes and then rinse it.


A bamboo cutting board needs little care and maintenance. However, it is essential to take this care in the right way to prolong its life as well as retain its appealing appearance.
