Why would someone look for lemon vs. lime if both are easily interchangeable? Well, the fact is that although they are interchangeable in some matters, both these fruits are unidentical. There are significant differences between them although they both belong to the same citrus family.

Lemons are usually preferred by those who are health-conscious and want to add some good fiber and vitamin C content to their diet. However, even limes contain good nutrition in the form of limonoids that facilitates a great health by keeping cancer away.

Origin and Shape

The lemon fruit comes from a small evergreen tree that has its origin in Asia. On the other hand, lime is a hybrid citrus fruit and is available in various forms around the world. While the shape of a lemon is of an ellipsoid, a lime has a typical circular shape.

Further, lemons are bright yellow in their ripe form, limes are typically green. In terms of size, limes are a bit smaller than a majority of lemons.

Nutritional Contents

Both the fruits are rich sources of vitamin C although they are not rich in terms of minerals and other vitamins. 100 g of lemons have approximately 53 mg of vitamin C, which is equivalent to 71% of a female’s normal intake. On the other hand, 29 mg of Vitamin C is present in 100 g limes, which is nearly 40% of the normal intake.

The pH Level

While both the fruits are acidic, limes seem to be more acidic than lemons. This is because of its bit lower pH value. Limes have a pH level ranging from 2 to 2.4, while lemons have a pH level ranging from 2 to 2.6. It should be noted that juice of any of the two will become more acidic with the passage of time.


Due to more sugar content, lemons are sweeter than lime. On the other hand, limes are tart or sour due to which they are chosen for making beverages or cocktails. Because consuming concentrated lime or lemon juice can be equally unlikable, the juice is usually blended with other ingredients for balancing the overall taste. Due to more acidic content, lemons are sourer.


While comparing lemon vs. lime, the two fruits seem to have many differences in terms of color, taste, and nutrients. In no way, lemons are not matured limes.
